2011 : un chollo

It was my friend Daniel who introduced me to the word. As I described my new English-teaching duties, his eyes grew wide. Only 16 hours a week? With insurance? And Fridays off, to boot? There was no doubt about it–“Es un chollo!”

“What’s a chollo?” I asked. He explained, but I would learn soon enough. Chollo is something positive, almost too-good-to-be-true. It can mean a “steal,” or, as wordreference defines it, a “cushy job.”

Sí señor, my job is squarely up there on the chollo-meter. There were rough patches but overall 2011 was a string of amazing chollos. For example:
