Antes de morir…

Antes de morir… / Before I die…

It would be an understatement to say that I’ve been stressed this week. I have two papers due on Friday, an intense 16-hour chunk of classes waiting for me this weekend, and a new-‘n-improved copy of my thesis due in just 10 days. Thankfully, the sun is out today! After all the snow and rain and wind that has been whipping through Madrid (as recently as this morning), today’s sun was a welcome change.

“Before I die I want to go to space”

I took advantage of the afternoon light to escape my notes and snap some pictures of a recent phenomenon in the ole barrio. Leave it to the happenin’ hipsters in Malasaña to come up with an idea this cool–a wall detailing dreams. The wall reads “Before I die,…” and has plenty of horizontal gaps ripe for the picking. This public art has really struck a chord, and though it is a recent work, all of the blanks have already been filled in.

Since the entire wall has been filled in, some clever people scribbled their wishes on heart-shaped post-its

“I want to TRIUMPH”

Other wishes read: “I want to see your eyes shine,” “I want to live on the beach,” and “I want to see the system change”

What would you write on the wishing wall?

  1. The “Before I Die” art project was actually created by Candy Chang in New Orleans ( The creator has given a TED Talk on the project:
So awesome that it’s made its way to Madrid!

  2. I, too, have seen this done before and thought about putting up a huge poster at work….but figured there would be too many posts that said, “get a different job!!”

@ Rebe – Oh, thanks for letting me know! I’ll have to check it out 🙂

@ Mot – Ha, yeah, better not invite fire with this one!

  4. I absolutely love it! I love ideas like this, so brilliant. Would love to see it myself 🙂

  5. Cassandra

You never know when one will pop up near you!

  6. Elizabeth Olson Porter

    Where in Malasaña is this?

  7. My wish – to open my own art gallery complex complete with cafe, book & music shop.

Just a small wish, but one in the realm of possibility.

  8. I love that the further into crisis it seems Spain is falling, Malasaña becomes more and more fascinating, innovative and accessible to others. Hipsters aside, public art is for everyone, awesome to see in person! Thanks for capturing.

Before I die, I want to start a business that makes a difference, has an impact on my community and beyond.

Thanks for sharing, guys. This wall was taken down last night by a crew of 3 men–let’s see if it goes up again!

  10. Wow Cassandra, I really like this and wish I saw it before they took it down. I can identify with the person who wants to see the system change, and the person who wants to go to space.

Hopefully another wishing wall will go up again soon, Dan. I’ll keep my ears open and let you know if I hear of another one!

This ciudad extremeña was beautiful after dark, and eerily empty of passers-by.
